Nail fungus, also known as onycholysis, is a common condition that often presents with a discoloration of the nail. Nail fungus happens when a fungus is able to enter the nail or infect underneath a nail, sometimes through break in the nail.
To avoid getting nail fungus, it is good to not walk barefoot in locker rooms or gymnasiums, keep your socks dry, choose a reputable nail salon, and wear properly fitting shoes.
Do not use nail polish or artificial nails to hide nail fungus because this can worsen an infection.
While topical antifugal treatments are available, nail fungus is difficult to treat. A consultation with a physician is recommended over self-care. Over-the-counter treatments are not effective. Your doctor may likely prescribe a prescription strength medicine, some of which are taken orally. There is an anti-fugal lacquer which can be helpful when combined with other treatments.
